What services do funeral directors perform?
A funeral director assists families through the loss of a loved one by providing bereavement support and handling arrangements for cremation, burial, and memorial services. Services include transfer of the deceased, embalming, casketing, cosmetology, consulting with families, filing permits, obtaining death certificates, coordinating with cemeteries or crematories, publishing obituaries, arranging clergy, music, flowers, transportation, directing services, and assisting with claims such as Social Security or VA benefits.
Why are funerals so expensive?
Funeral costs reflect multiple services and items including professional service fees, transportation of the deceased, embalming, preparation, use of facilities for viewing and ceremonies, vehicles such as a hearse, printed materials, caskets, vaults or grave liners, and cemetery plots.
What is the purpose of a funeral?
A funeral or memorial service allows loved ones to honor and remember the deceased. It provides a space to express grief, share memories, and gain support from others experiencing loss.
What are the choices for funeral services?
The main types of funeral services include traditional funeral services, memorial services, committal services, and celebration of life services.
Can you still have a funeral if you choose cremation?
Yes. Cremation or burial is simply the method of disposition. Funeral services can still be held to honor and remember your loved one.
Can I plan in advance if I choose cremation?
Yes. Pre-arranging funeral services can be done regardless of whether you choose cremation or burial. It involves documenting your wishes and optionally prefunding services.
What information should I bring to the arrangement conference?
Bring advance directives, military discharge papers, cemetery property details, a recent photo, and personal items for viewing. You should also provide key details such as full legal name, address, marital status, Social Security number, birth information, education, military service, occupation, parents' names, and next of kin.
